Memorial Day is a time to remember and honor the many heroes who have given so much to secure the freedoms we enjoy in the United States today. While our traditional celebrations like music in the park, parades, and fun family events may continue to be put on hold, there is still a buzz in the air that has us appreciating this very special Florida Keys Memorial Day. Seize the moment by putting your freedoms to good use; by getting out there and leaning something new, trying something different, and making memories with the people who mean the most to you.
Florida Keys Memorial Day Weekend Activities
Nothing says “Memorial Day” like taking advantage of the sunny weather and getting out on the water! Lucky for you, there’s plenty of water and plenty of things to do on the barrier islands off the west coast of Florida. To start, soaking up some Vitamin D on the shoreline of the Gulf of Mexico is always a good idea. Voted the #1 beach in America, it’s your civic duty to visit Siesta Key Beach while you’re here. When you get the soft, white sand between your toes you’ll see what all the fuss is about. Claim your spot on the beach while being sure to take advantage of all the amenities, like the kids’ playground, the cafe (Is there anything better than a firecracker popsicle at the beach on Memorial Day?), and the tennis courts.
When it comes to actually getting out on the water, you won’t believe all the options available to you. To start, you can easily rent a pontoon or speedboat for hours of entertainment on the water. Whether you’re looking to fish, ski, or simply get away from the crowds, there are lots of boat rental agencies standing by, ready to help. If you’re not looking for speed, we highly recommend you rent some paddle boards or choose a kayak adventure. These simpler modes of transportation open all sorts of possibilities. For example, some guests love to paddle out to a private sandbar for their own mini getaway. Others choose to explore the vast area with hidden treasures of experiences, which is easy to do with all the waterways, canals, and mangrove canopy caves. Finally, some of our guests love choosing the guided tour option. Book a sunset dolphin tour, go on a deep sea fishing adventure, or stow away on a banana boat adventure!
While outdoor recreation is always fun, there is also a lot of history and sacrifice to consider on this special holiday. A visit to some significant sites might do your heart some good. We recommend a trip to the Anna Maria Island Historical Society Museum. Founded in 1992, this museum displays artifacts, photographs and maps that go all the way back to the Island’s earliest history as an Indian fishing camp. Museum hours for May-December are Tuesday-Saturday from 10am to 1pm. Admission is free, though donations are greatly appreciated, so this is a great destination to stop and pay homage to those who paved the way.
As long as you’re headed north, another fantastic stop is Bean Point, the northernmost point of the Florida Keys, located on Anna Maria Island. While there are no structures at the site today, this was the original homestead that would prompt the development of the cities and streets you see today. It’s a great spot to sit on a picnic blanket and be alone with your thoughts, fly a kite, and watch for cresting marine life in the far distance.
