Key West is always up to the task of keeping its residents and guests on their toes. Maybe it’s their Running of the Bulls, complete with wood bulls and Ernest Hemingway lookalikes that will tickle your funny bone, or maybe it will be the surprising and delicate beauty of the butterflies flitting to and fro in the Butterfly and Nature Conservatory that will make you realize that a Key West vacation in a RentTheKeys vacation sanctuary is a national treasure. Or maybe, just maybe, it will be your visit to Harry S. Truman’s Little White House that will finally open your eyes to the beauty, wonder, and quirkiness of Key West, moving it to the number one spot on your list of best vacations ever!
Located at 111 Front Street, Naval Air Station Key West, Open 9:30 AM -4:30 PM Everyday
Originally built in 1890 for the purpose of housing the Navy Commandant and the Paymaster, the Little White House has been used as a residence for visiting Presidents since 1912, when President Taft first visited. (By then they combined the two homes into one spacious retreat!) Also used as temporary living quarters for renowned scientists, Thomas Edison, and Joint Chiefs of Staff during the Key West Accord, it was 1946 when President Truman made his first visit to what would soon become called President Harry S. Truman House. Why was it named after him when it had housed so many honorable celebrities and politicians, you ask? Truman actually spent 11 working vacations under its shingled roof, returning five more times after his presidency ended, hence the name! Obviously, he too recognized the magic that is Key West, and today, this beautiful structure is the only Presidential museum in the entire state!
