Bahia Honda Key is a bit further out and lesser known than Key Largo or Key West, but that doesn’t mean you should skip it during your drive down the Overseas Highway. Early on it became a must visit, especially after Henry Flagler’s railroad was completed. Today, it is the site of the Bahia Honda State Park, offering serene beaches, incredible views, and a sky filled with stars that seem to hang within reach, making visitors want to reach up and pluck one to hold forever. Bahia Honda State Park: Is This Paradise?
The beaches of Bahia Honda Park—there are three in total—are destined to make you feel as if you have finally found paradise on earth, as will the seas that lap against their sandy shores! Spend your hours soaking in the rays of the Florida sun, feeling your skin being caressed by gentle sea breezes, and forgetting that real life exists out there. This is your time to play, and when you make a stop at this state park, you will always find something new to explore. Snorkeling, either just off the beach on your own (the concession offers snorkeling gear if you didn’t bring your own) or with the help of the Coral Reef Co. Snorkel Boat Tour, is another popular activity in paradise, and as you explore the world under the sea, don’t be surprised to discover this is becoming your newest obsession! Known for being the darkest sky location in the Keys, nighttime visits give guests the opportunity to stargaze to their heart’s content, but since the park closes at sundown, this adventure is only open to those who are spending the night. Turtle Nesting Season takes place from March 1 to October 31st, so if you are lucky, you may witness a turtle nest; just don’t go too close, as the sea turtles are endangered and volunteers from all over the state are hovering nearby, working their hardest to ensure the new turtle babies have a fair chance of survival!
